Unfortunately, you will probably need to refund a donation sooner or later. When that happens, Charitable has your back with an easy way to refund donations in your WordPress dashboard.
You can also refund donations (including partial refunds) through your payment gateway account.
Refund from the WordPress dashboard
If you need to refund a donation, you can do that directly in your WordPress dashboard if the donation was made using one of the following payment gateways:
- PayPal
- Authorize.Net
- Braintree
- GoCardless
- Mollie
- Paystack
- Stripe
- Windcave
Using a different payment gateway? You’ll need to refund the donation directly in your payment processor account.
Here’s how to refund a donation:
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Charitable > Donations.
- Find the donation you want to refund and click to view it.
- On the next page, in the “Donation Actions” meta box on the right, choose the option to change the status to Refunded.
- Check the option to also refund the payment in your payment gateway.
- Click on Update Status.
Refund through the payment gateway
Sometimes, it may be better to refund a donation through your payment processor account. For example, if you only need to partially refund a donation, this is something you will need to do through your payment gateway.
The steps to refund a donation through the gateway varies, so below we have assembled links to the relevant documentation for each payment gateway.
After you refund a payment in your payment gateway, most payment gateways (excluding Windcave) will notify Charitable about the refund and the status of the donation in Charitable will automatically change to Refunded.
